Generally Ms. Banerjee lays her hand on any opportunity that comes her way to create a law and order situation by all whatever violent means possible or at least she would demand a CBI inquiry into an incident of ordinary crime. But that night she did not raise even her eyebrow over the killing of Sarbani Saha who lost her life being hit by a bullet fired by one of the rival groups in Patuapara, close to Kalighat Road, only a stone’s throw from her residence. She has denied the involvement of her brothers in the murder of Sarbani but people in the locality stated unambiguously that Sarbani was the victim of a shooting spree that was resorted to be the rival groups led by Ms Mamata Banerjee’s brothers Kartick Banerjee and Babun Banerjee to spread their area of influence besides settling old scores.

Ms Mamata Banerjee’s silence over the killing of Sarbani Saha is obviously ver intriguing.

How the incident occurred? Two groups of the Trinamul Congress were engaged in exchange of fire close to Kalighat Road. One group was led by Ms Mamata Banerjee’s brother Kartick Banerjee and the other group by Bubun Banerjee, another brother of Ms Banerjee. Kartick Mondal happens to be the "right hand man of" of Kartick Banerjee. Mondal was the target of attack of Bubun Banerjee’s group, Bubun’s group entered the area travelling by taxis having come to know that Kartick Mondal could be found there. Shots were fired from the taxis and Kartick Mondal and his accomplices returned the fire. In the cross firing Sarbani Saha who was returning home having finished her days work, was hit by a bullet in the shoulder. She died on the spot. She was pronounced dead when taken to the SSKM hospital.

Next day a 12-hour bandh was called in the area by the CPI(M) and CPI to protest against the activities of the Trinamul Congress groups. Local people in the Kalighat area say that the rival groups of the Trinamul Congress shelter anti-socials. They add that such violent incidents take place periodically over grabbing property in the area for construction of multi-storied buildings. These anti-socials have a liaison with the realtors in the area. Trinamul leaders of different tiers grab vacant lands with the help of muscle power. Trading in illicit liquor, extortion of money from people building houses or buying flats in the area cannot escape without contributing large amounts of money to the rival groups. The two rival Trinamul groups have well-demarcated line of operation in Kalighat but very often this understanding is breached.

On that fateful evening Kartick Mondal, right-hand man of Kartick Banerjee was to be eliminated by Babun Banerjee’s group and Sarbani Saha lost her life in the crosfiring. To hide their crime the Trinamul activists and antisocial went to the Mominpur mortuary next day to bring the body of Sarbani Saha to show the people in the breth that Sarbani was one of them. They forced the close relatives of Sarbani Saha not to protest against their action. They brought the body of the deceased in a procession too.

All or most of the members of the rival Trinamul Groups have police records. Many of them have been arrested in the past too.

Unnerved by the adverse popular reaction to the killing of Sarbani Saha, Ms. Mamata Banerjee held a Press Conference at her Kalighat residence where instead of owning the responsibility for the crime, she resorted to personal vilification of the Chief Minister Jyoti Basu and of the members of the Basu family ---- a trait which is so common in Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee and Mr. George Fernendes whose diatribes against Ms. Sonia Gadhi have generated countrywide adverse reaction. Who can forget what drama Ms. Mamata Banerjee got enacted over the so called rape of Mrs Champala Sardar of Bhangar before that last panchayat election? But here balloon of publicity was punctured after the medical report went against the Trinamul Congress’s charge of rape of the concerned woman.
