| NEWS The real face of Trinamul in West Bengal
Staff Reporter W ithin a short span of time, we are going to enter the twenty-first century. The last seventeen months have been tough for the Indians. The political scenario in this country was vastly changed during these months. Bharatiya Janata Party had come to power seventeen months earlier with a group of thirteen other political parties like Trinamul Congress (TMC) in West Bengal, AIDMK in Tamilnadu etc. But after few months the unholy alliance was entangled in infighting, which made it difficult for the alliance partners to be kept under one single umbrella. After thirteen months, the BJP led Govt. at the centre failed to win the majority-support test in the parliament. This is the reason why the Indians are now facing another poll within a period of just seventeen months. It is the last election of this century. But unfortunately in this election, the major question before the electorate is whether the tradition of unity in diversity in Indian culture and civilisation can be preserved, or shall we be destroyed by fratricidal strife?Certain recent events have particularly highlighted this question before the electorate. Going back a few months earlier i.e. from December 25 to 31, 1998, we find the protagonists of Hindutva running amuck. They set fire to nine and vandalised eleven churches across the Dangs, the smallest district in Gujrat. In a pre-planned guerilla style operation, night after night throughout the week, hundreds of them ransacked the villages inhabited by Christians, vandalizing and setting fire to their homes, destroying churches and prayer houses and beating up men and women belonging to the Christian faith. It was an attack on the fundamental nights of the citizens of the country. The campaign of the forces of Hindutva against Christians culminated in the brutal act of burning alive of an Australian Evangelist missionary and two of his children in Keonjhar District of Orissa on the night of January 22-23 of this year. Graham Stewart Staines (58) and his sons Philip(9) and Timothy (6), died when the jeep in which they were sleeping at Mondharpur village was set on fire by Bajrang Dal activists. In yet another instance of provocative action from the saffron brigade, on December 3, 1998 more than 10,000 supporters of the Parivar came close to triggering off a blood bath at the Baba Budangin shrine in Chickmugalur district of Karnataka. The shrine was managed by a Muslim priestly family for centuries and is visited by Hindus and Muslims alike. It has been a symbol of Hindu Muslim unity since ages. The saffron brigade had planned to 'liberate' the shrine and also announced their plan to 'liberate' another dargah in Richur. This is the way in which they attacked the very question of unity between the Hindus and Muslims. In West Bengal he saffron brigade has come by another name and form. It has alliance with the Trinamul Congress (TMC) in West Bengal led by Mamata Banerjee. Though the alliance is of quite a recent origin, it has come with all its evils. This party has split from Congress and now is in alliance with BJP. The TMC has no political idealism to proclaim. TMC is famous in West Bengal for its declared bitterness against CPI(M) supporters, workers, party members and the party leaders. During the last month itself the TMC activists were involved in at least twenty instances of attacks on common people and CPI(M) supporters like. They carried out ransacking and provocative acts throughout West Bengal during the last few months. We cite some recent occurrences. TMC-BJP hooligans attacked a guardian meeting of a primary school at Barasata of North 24 Parganas on 2nd August. Five guardians were severely injured. In yet another incidence, TMC activists physically assaulted the teacher of Krichipur High School at Barasat. They were trying to sabotage the system of admission of students according to their merit. TMC antisocials attacked SFI activists of Fakir Chand College in Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas on 4th August only because they gave a deputation to the Principal against the antisocial activities of TMC within the College premises. They even assaulted a schoolboy in Pursura, Hooghly on 12th August who was a supporter of SFI. Players were also not exempted. Sakti Dey (22) a young footballer was murdered at Bongao of North 24 Pargana on 15th August by some anti socials supported by TMC leader. Sakti had raised his voice against TMC's antisocial work, which has angered TMC bosses. On 6th August 1999, the TMC-sheltered criminals looted and plundered 26 houses at Balaramghar and Karikasuli in Bankura. The villagers resisted them but the criminals did not even spare the women. Another instance of TMC-BJP misdeed is the attack on villagers of Kotulpur of Bankura on 27th August. The Trinamul Brigade of Bankura ransacked the houses of villagers of Sihar, Jayrambah, Gopinathpur Putpur and Haldi from early morning to evening. From the two year old Madhab of Jayrambati to the eighty year old Shake Abbas of Siromumipuri, none was spared. Madan Ghosh of Goghat in Hoogli was murdered in the brutalest way possible on 16 th September. Sabita Roy is the village Panchayet Pradhan of Bhadur village panchayet under Jalpaiguri sub division. The TMC-BJP supporters assaulted Sabita Roy on 25th August and ransacked the Guma - 1No. Panchayet building at Habra of North 24 Pargana on 20th August . West Bengal CPI(M) State Secretary and Polit Bureau member, Anil Biswas, had a narrow escape on August 22, when his car was attacked by a band of Trinmul groups on NH 34. Biswas was returning to Calcutta after attending a district committee meeting at Krishnagar.Such had been their acts throughout the last month. One can enlarge the list further if one goes back the time lane. This arrogance and brutality of the BJP-TMC bandwagon demonstrates scant respect for the democratic setup of the state, which has brought panic in the mind of the people. The BJP-TMC combine has raised a question mark upon the very unity and integrity of the country. |
