| Editorial Please explain - Mr. Prime Minister O n 16th September Pakistani Foreign Minister Sartaj Aziz revealed in Pakistan Senate that there was a secret deal about a possible Kashmir pact between Prime Minister of India and Pakistan. Earlier in an interview last week Pakistan Prime Ministers Special Envoy Niaz Naik had alleged that a deal on Kashmir had been finalised between the two Prime Ministers but the process got derailed because of the Kargil misadventure by Pakistani army. The present caretaker government has denied the content of the above statement and the interview. But the Govt. cannot deny that Niaz Naik was in Delhi during the Kargil conflict and he met the Indian Prime Minister and his colleagues. Similarly visit of R. Mishra of the Ambani owned newspaper "The Observer of Business and Politics" along with a senior Indian diplomat to Pakistan to hold talks with Sharif govt. during the conflict, still remains unexplained. And of course the telephonic talk between the two Prime Ministers. Mr Vajpayee and his govt. owe detailed explanation to the people as to what was actually discussed between the two Prime Ministers and their emissaries. Transparency in such a vital matter as foreign affairs cannot remain mere words and if the present govt. does not come clear on the issue, there should be a parliamentary probe, after the election, into the whole affair which is becoming murkier day by day with charges of sugar and power deal between the two countries while conflict went on in the border. 20th September, 1999. |
