| NEWSNOTES TRANSBORDER TERRORISM IN TRIPURA
From India News Network(INN) I n a sequel to the sacrifice of security of the North-East including Tripura on the alter of political profiteering by the BJP-led caretaker government, anti-Left Front vested interest supported extremists carry out the biggest over abduction of on-duty government employees at a time in Tripura, alongside inflicting casualties on by-and-large left activists in the almost daily quote of dastardly hit-and-run operations by extremists statewide over the last few days. At about 2 p.m. on the September 6, a group of nearly 25 sophisticated armed NLFT extremists stormed the bloc development office of Manu, Dhalai district situated in a forested terrain. With a view extremists standing guard at the office compound, the rest barged into the rooms, two extremists each. The office was then teeming with government employees of several panchayats attending the official monthly meeting with the BDO. At gun-point the extremists made 16 people, 12 panchayat employees and 4 bloc employees, stand in raw and then run towards jungle track. One of the extremists also fired in the air. By the time the police personnel of Manu police station, about 400 hundred metres away rushed out on hearing the booming of guns, the extremists had made good their escape along with the 16 hostages. In another incident on the same day, a state owned Tripura Road Transport Corporation bus was ambushed by extremists at Taichakma on its way from Teliamura, West Tripura to Amarpur, south Tripura. Two passengers including a CPI(M) activist were killed by extremists gun-fire and another was severely injured. The acting chief minister Anil Sarkar and the CPI(M) state secretariat, in separate statements, have vehemently condemned these two incidents of September 6. While instructing the police to go all out to rescue the abducted, the acting chief minister has reiterated the demand for adequate central security forces to combat the extremist onslaughts. The CPI(M) views the centre's nonchalant pull-out of all army units and a huge chunk of para-military forces from the state in the face of a desperate escalation of extremists onslaughts in the pre-poll period, as a virtual extension of helping hand to extremist. In another statement the state Left Front committee has noted with serious concern, that quite a number of people including left democratic activists have been killed or kidnapped by extremists statewide over the last few days, in the pre-poll scenario of a planned plot to escalate killing, kidnapping and extortion with view to triggering turmoil and disrupting development in Tripura. Despite the post-Kargil threat to destabilise the North-East by means of CIA/ISI-sponsored transborder terrorism, the BJP-led caretaker government at the centre keeps turning a blind eye to the security needs of Tripura, and a deaf ear to the oft-repeated demand of the state government for adequate central forces. The Left Front opines that this systematic stepping down of security has emboldened the imperialism supported extremists to step-up their inhumanly violent activities to pollute pre-poll atmosphere in Tripura, helping vested interests try to reap political harvest. In protest against the centre's extreme neglect to the security of life and property in Tripura and to press for adequate central security forces in the state, the Left Front has called a twelve-hour Tripura bandh on September 8. The bandh has been total and trouble-free. Incidentally, eight people overall, including five democratic activists, mostly CPI(M), and one innocent school teacher, have been killed and a total of nineteen people including three left democratic youth activists have been kidnapped by extremists in several incidents over the last seven days in Tripura. Some other have been severely injured in the incidents. |
