Unnerved by the prospects of a rout in the forthcoming Lok Sabha election at the hands of the Left Front candidates in West Bengal on October 3, the Trinamul-BJP hooligans mounted dastardly attack on the CPI (M) General Secretary, Harkishen Singh Surjeet while he was proceeding to attend election meetings of the CPI (M) candidates in the suburbs of Calcutta on Thursday.

The first incident occurred in the morning at Birati when the criminals attacked the car in which Surjeet was travelling, to attend an election meeting. In the evening also they pelted stones at the car at Panihati as Surjeet was heading for Baranagar from Titagarh. Both the places are in North 24 Parganas district. Although the car carrying Surjeet could escape from being hit by the brickbats, a few persons accompanying Surjeet on motor cycles were injured. The officer-in-charge of the Khardha police stations several constables were injured in the attack. Surjeet however escaped unhurt.

The secretary of the Committee of the CPI (M) Anil Biswas, has condemned the attack on the CPI (M) General Secretary, Harkishen Singh Surjeet stating that the Trinamul-BJP combine by launching such attacks on the senior leaders of the CPI (M) was conspiring to create disturbance in the State and disturb peace in the state before the election. Biswas called upon both the CPI (M) and Left Front workers to organize processions and meetings condemning he incidents. Although the people of as many as 12 districts in South Bengal were severely affected by the severest of rains in the past two decades, such protest meetings were held on Friday in many places. Protest meetings were held in not so severely affected areas. In North Bengal Left Front held a meeting at Siliguri condemning the activities of the Trinamul-BJP antisocials. The police have arrested 12 persons till Friday in connection with the attacks on Harkishen Singh Surjeet, CPI (M) General Secretary. The police is however on the look out for a few more persons for being involved in the crime.
