
| NEWSNOTES Police Action on agitating JNU students:14 students including JNUSU leadership sent to Tihar Jail.
From India News Network(INN) T he Central Executive Committee(CEC) of Students Federation of India(SFI) , condemns in the strongest possible words, the police action on the peacefully agitating students of JNU. Yesterday early in the morning the entire campus of the university was virtually turned in to a police cantonment, to crush the democratic rights of - to protest and agitate, of the students community, the vice-chancellor called the police force and let them loose to deal with the students. More than four hundred police personnel of PAC and Delhi Armed police forcibly lifted the students from various places in the campus. Even the girls were not spared. Total 62 students were arrested and taken to Sarojini Nagar police station. Later in the police station, following the dictates from the vice-chancellor, who, it seems in determined to destroy and snatch the democratic rights of the JNUs students community, police while targeting the JNUSU leadership and the leaders of SFI unit charged through under sections 342/34, 151 & 107 of IPC and CrPc. Apart from the specially targeted 14 students, other were released on bail. But, for the 14 charged under section 151 & 107 of CrPC inspite of the bail bonds produced by the lawyers for which the teachers of JNU stood as sureties, the police and special executive magistrate SHO Mr. Onkar Prasad mislead the lawyers and JNU teachers and students by saying that bail will be taken in Vasant Vihar court of Special Executive Magistrate , asked the sureties and lawyers to come over there, the Special Executive Magistrate sent the 14 students to jail.The SFI condemns, this illegal detention of students. SFI while demanding the immediate release of the students, calls upon the entire student community of the country to observe, 4th October 1999 as the country wide Protest Day against the authoritarian, dictatorial attitude of the vice-chancellor and police. We appeal to the entire student community to rise in unison against these attacks. |
