| Editorial Goebles - Based On Bengal LineWest Bengal is witnessing spectre of Goebles in his crudest form in the Trinamool Congress (TC) leader, her BJP ally and of course their captive media in Calcutta. After the recent parliamentary election results were declared this week, these Bengal versions of Goebles are vying with each other to project before the rest of the world that all is lost for the Left Front in West Bengal. "Red bastion severely damaged" - claimed some newspapers. The TC leader went further and boasted in a press conference that in 155 out of 294 assembly seats in West Bengal, TC is in leading position as per her poll figures. What are the facts out of 42 parliamentary constituencies Left Front has won 29. Yes, 4 less than last election in 1998. But the votes polled in its favour still remains 46.74% as against 46.83% last time and CPI (M); the major constituent gets 35.57% as against 35.41% in 1998. Does it show major erosion to attract media headlines? As for the TC leader's claim of leading in assembly segments, Election Commission's result shows that it is not 155 but 65 only. As a matter of fact, along with her allies the figure is 83. The Left Front has an unassailable lead in 189 out of 294 seats. Goeble-ian technique of lies and more lies to mislead the people has been really mastered by the neo fascist anti-Left forces in West Bengal. 11th October, 1999. |
