| NEWSNOTES After diesel, its foodgrains
Staff Reporter The BJP-led government is back to its old tricks just after the end of the voting process. On October 5, a day after the elections ended, the Centre hiked the prices of diesel. Such was the hurry that the government did not even wait for the polling process to end totally and the counting to end. But more dangers lie ahead; we are told that the next round will go to the ration system and there will be rise in prices of foodgrains. The prices of cheap rice through the public distribution system is set to increase. The process has begun in the food ministry. The excuse being given is that the minimum support price of rice had been hiked on October 1. But the fact of the matter is that while the rise in support price has been only 11 per cent, the projected rise in procurement price is to be around 40 per cent. The governments excuse thus does not hold any water. But this is not the first time that the BJP-led government has done this; all price rises have been indulged in with a systematic ease and control which smacks of a plot to make the rich richer and the poorer more impoverished. In fact, the government had tried to increase the price of cheap rice once but had to withdraw the order in the face of sustained agitation by farmers and the masses. Obviously, the hike in the price of diesel is just a part of a larger gameplan; there will be hikes in prices of kerosene, cooking gas and other essential commodities soon. This government has returned to power only to wreak havoc on the country. |
