The CPI(M) has called upon the people to resist anti-people acts of the BJP-led government at the Centre. It the same time the people have to foil all decisions of the government of the NDA intended to spread the Hindutva ideology jeopardizing the interests of other communities and prevent infiltration of communal elements in the administration. At the end of the West Bengal Committee meeting of the CPI(M) on 14 October the CPI(M) Secretary Anil Biswas said all undemocratic acts of the BJP-led government would have to be resisted. The State Committee meeting was presided over by the Politburo Member of the party Sailen Dasgupta.

In the State level, the loss due to the recent floods would have to be made up and people affected by the ecalamities would have to be rehabilitated.

On the results of the recently-concluded Lok Sabha election Anil Biswas said that the BJP has made full use of the failure of the opposition to form a government at the Centre following the fall of the Vajpayee government through confidence vote in April. The Kargil conflict with Pakistan too diverted the people's attention; so the destructive policies and activities of the BJP for 17 months could not be highlighted. The absence of a credible Third Front coming up also helped the BJP-led NDA. The print and the electronic media too continued a slander campaign against the left and democratic parties. The Congress too did not come up to the expectations of the people nor did it make any declaration to give up it anti-people policies. The Congress attempt to provide an alternative to the BJP and its combination alone also became its undoing. The election result of the Congress turned out to be very poor.

Biswas said in West Bengal the CPI(M) would have to make a realistic review of the Lok Sabha election results. The areas of weakness would have to be identified from the organisational and political levels.

Biswas said that the CPI(M) fared worse than last year Lok Sabha election. In many cases the CPI(M) vote share has also come down. However considering the grave adverse factors that the party had to encounter it would not be desirable to downgrade the success achieved in the poll. It is however, natural the enemies of the CPI(M) would try to create wrong impression among the minds of the people by resorting to a relentless slander campaign against us. The success achieved through the election would have to be consolidated and the political campaign among the urban and rural people, victims of misinformation would have to be conducted to clear the would now be clear the wrong impressions they have gathered. Any attempt to break the unity of the people will have to be resisted by giving them the correct politics.

Representatives from different districts submitted preliminary election reports to the State Committee. It has been decided that detailed review of the election results will be made at the next State Committee meeting scheduled to be held in Calcutta on October 31 and 9 November.
