The central committee of the CPI(M) which met here has called upon the party the party is committee to defend democratic rights to oppose any anti-democratic moves contemplated by the new governments. This was said by CPI)(M0 general secretary Harkishan Singh Surjeet while addressing a press conference here today to brief about the outcome of the central committee meeting.

Surjeet said this should be noteworthy that the BJP has not been able to increase the own tally in the election. Thought the overall increase of seats in the alliance is due to the non-BJP partners who have got around 120 seats. Mainly it the post falls of the Vajpayee government allies TDP and DMK have seen the BJP to such a number.

Explaining the three major reasons among the various reason which helped the BJP and its allies Surjeet said that the failure to form an alternative government when the Vajpayee government collapsed in April 1999. Secondly, the Kargil conflict which was fought unitedly by the countrymen, have taken into background the failure and the misgoverancne of the 13th month government during which there was attack on minorities, anti people economic polices, communal character and the attacks on democratic institution has gone into to backburner.

Surjeet said that another reasons is that the BJP alliance have been able to wider with the inclusion of major regional parties like the TDP in Andhra Pradesh and the DMK in Tamil Nadu and also the fact a section of the Janata Dal decided to join them. These wide ranging alliance have to some extent helped BJP to hide their communal fangs and its anti-secular policies from the masses, he added.

Surjeet said apart from these the absence of any viable alternative alliance specially a major weakness in the national political situation for the left and democratic force was the absence of the third force at the national level. He said that because some parties of the erstwhile united front decided to join BJP side and other falling apart on the difference, which arose on the question of being equidistant to the BJP and congress there was there was no possibility of a national alliance before the election. Surjeet said this was a problem being faced by party and the left in various ways.

About congress he said that the congress was the second biggest party after the BJP, but it had fared worst in the election since 1952.The congress did not changed its policies of liberalisation since 1991 which have created havoc to the economy. Moreover the congress claim that they will only projection the congress made was that it would provide a stable government alone. People have not taken it. They know the reality of the situation. In way back in early nineteen we have said that there will be no one party government in the centre for ablest in immediate future. Not only that BJP was able to make the election camping into a fight between Vajpayee and Sonia Gandhi.

Surjeet said that the big business which used to support the congress are all now behind the big business, Moreover, the big business owned media and Prasar Bharti was used to create pro BJ P opinion. Even after all this BJP got the same number of seats which it got last time. In UP one of their stronghold they feared very badly.

Sujreet said that in the central committee meeting a preliminary analysis of the performance of the CPI (M) and the left. Though CPI (M) have got 32 seats CPI has lost few seats. He said that though we have lost few seats, it is not much, our West Bengal State committee is going to review. Other state committee will also and we will discuss it in the next meeting of the central committee. Surjeet said that central committee decided to undertake a more full-fledged review of the election results and left’s performance after the state committees conduct their elections reviews. He said it will be necessary to examine what are the weaknesses are trends, which affected the lefts performance.

Surjeet said that the BJP led government assuming office is based on a alliance of various parties which polices are contradictory to each other. Unlike the BJP its major supporters the TDP and its ally the DMK do not share the hindutva ideology, even though they collaborated with the BJP. Surjeet pointed out that these regional parties have aspirations and are for more federalism where as BJP is opposed to it and is only interested in hinduvt consolidations. He said that the disparate and conflicting aims of the alliance partners would bring to the fore contradictions.

Surjeet said moreover, there is likely to be pushing of hinduvta agenda by the Sangh Parivar. They will make covert and systematic efforts to advance their aims Surjeet said the economic situation is worsening and already the Prime Minister has called for hard decisions to be taken. It price increase is now fuelling inflation by increased transport and fare rates. There is also a proposal to hike in the public distribution system.

In such a situation Surjeet said that the central committee decided that it will resolutely oppose any attempt to push through the hinduvta agnda and the penetration of the state apparatus by the communal forces. The party is committed to defend democratic rights and oppose any anti-democratic moves contemplated by the new government. The central committee has called upon the party to oppose any fresh onslaughts on the people though harmful economic policies and ceaselessly fight against price rise, unemployment and other mass issues. The party will support the mass organisations that take up such issues for united struggles to defend the rights of the people.

Surjeet said that the central committee reiterated the need to reforge the unity of the left, democratic and secular forces so as to present an effective third alternative. The election results have debunked talk of the emergence of a two-party -system. The secular non-congress parties, which fought the BJP, have a substantial number of seats in parliament. Developing united struggles and movements will facilitate a regrouping of these forces.

He said that the central committee decided to meet in the third week of November after the state committees conduct their reviews, to make a full-fledged review of the elections. This will beutlised to examine the weaknesses in the party's ideological -political-organisational work and to set out concrete steps for strengthening the partys activities and influence among the people.

Surjeet was asked whether in West Bengal when TMC_BJP entered there was a danger signal or not, if so what the CPI(M) did and why BJP was amle to get more seats. Surjeet said that always congress was getting less than 2percent of seat they us. This is nothing new. Now the congress votes had shifted to triamul-BJP. We have lost only three more seats, that may be because of the incumbency factor, state have hardly any resources to fulfil the aspirations and demands of the people, anyhow we have to see it. Moreover, BJP has emerged all over the country, not only here.

Surjeet was asked as to what had happened to the third front government, Surjeet said we might have noticed that in both in electronic media and radio it was I have stated that let them form the government. You should go to the reality of the results.

A question was asked suppose the BJP government falls will there will be third front government, Surjeet snubbed the reporter of Jain TV, don’t put word on my mouth. The government is only taking oath tomorrow. People want stability, do not put such word as we who want to put the government down.

Aske d as to whether CPI(M) felt it was wrong to say that CPI(M) will support congress government, Surjeet said we have never said so. We consider both the BJP and congress as party of landlord bourgeois. But we distinguish between two only that while congress though it compromises with the communal forces but it is a secular party and it has a role to defeat BJP, it is a different thing whether they were able to do it or not. In those places where we the left was strong and there was no third front parties, we asked the voters to vote for those who will defeat the BJP. In fact we have fought the congress

He was asked that RSP is blaming that because of CPI(M0 the results is such, they have asked for attitudinal change on the part of CPI(M) , and that they are dictating terms to other left parties, Surjeet said that, RSP exists mainly in West Bengal and Kerala, and in both the states they are with us. In Kerala their party has spirited and we are trying to accommodate both the groups.
