NEWSNOTES
Bofors and After
The Congress is particularly perturbed about the Bofors chargesheet and has said that the inclusion of Rajiv Gandhi’s name in the list was ``politically motivated’’ to get at Sonia Gandhi. On the other hand, the Union home minister Lal Krishna Advani has said that the CBI chargesheet was indeed ``politically motivated…but to expose corruption at the top.’’, but is eloquently silent on why Hindujas, believed to be one of the bribe-getters have not been chargesheeted, perhaps they are only too close to the Prime Minister and his people.

ANALYSIS
India & CTBT
lbball1.gif (110 bytes)THE United State Senate has refused to ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). The immediate result of the Senate decision is easing of US pressure on India to sign the CTBT. For the present, it has let the Vajpayee government off the hook. It is however necessary to recall how the Vajpayee government in its previous stint of thirteen months, after relentless American pressure, had committed India to sign the CTBT.
