The Left Front has taken up a programme to demand more flood relief and infrastructural support from the Centre. At a meeting held in Calcutta on Saturday, the Front leadership detailed a plan in which rallies would be taken out in the Capital and dharnas would be resorted to by the leaders of the Left in Delhi if the flood relief continued to be tardy. The meeting said that the state had already suffered a loss of around Rs 2087 crores of which the state administration had already spent Rs 61 crores.

The Centre had been asked for another Rs 721 crores but the Centre was indifferent as always. At the end of the meeting, a memorandum was submitted to the Governor Shyamal Kumar Sen on behalf of the state leadership of the Front while it was decided that the chief minister would also be given a copy for forwarding to the Prime Minister. The memorandum has detailed the Centre’s indifference as also mentioned specific areas like sewage and other problems which needed immediate funds to be released by the Centre. The memorandum said that the state was being hamstrung by lack of funds and that the money, which anyway was little and far from adequate, was being released by the Centre much after it was due thus making it difficult for the administration to implement relief programmes.

Addressing the rally, the Left Front chairman Sailen Dasgupta said that the recent floods had taken the lives of around 100 people in 15 districts and property worth lakhs had been lost. The Centre had taken little interest in the progress work of the relief

and that it could not shirk responsibility for the damage.
