JP govt wants to down the shutters

Staff Reporter

The BIFR has notified the Centre about closing down the public sector Cycle Corporation . The Cycle Corporation is one of the six public sector corporations which the BJP-led government at the Centre wants to shut down in West Bengal. The notice pertaining to the Cycle Corporation was sent to the Centre on October 14 and thus renders the fate of around 800 employees uncertain.

The letter asks why the Corporation should not be closed down and sets a timeframe of one month for the questions to be answered. A copy of the letter has been sent to the state reconstruction ministry and the unions of the corporation.

The Asansol MP Bikash Chowdhury alongwith other Left leaders have already met the Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and told him that the Cycle Corporation should not be closed down without alternative arrangements for the employees who would be out on the streets. They said that this was only a plot to strip the Bengal government of yet another industrial unit and harm its image.

They also said that it was strange that the BIFR letter did not have any mention of the project report which had fallen by the wayside after the collapse of the United Front Government in Delhi. That report had outlined a framework by which the unit could have been saved and the absence of any mention of the report obviously smacked of a conspiracy.
