Women go under in South Korea
Special Correspondent T he status and condition of women in South Korea are appalling. But the women workers of the country are slowly organising themselves into a protest factor and there seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel. It is significant that there has not been much of turn in the fortunes of women of this country though South Korea has transformed itself into an ``Asian Tiger which, in other words, means it is a potent industrial force now.A new organisation has been formed which is seeking to cooordinate the activities of the women work force which is about 40 per cent of the total workforce. There is tremendous wage disparity with men and despite the apparent industrial growth, a wave of uncertainty has gripped the work force comprising women of the country. This new organisation could well be a pathbreaker and help do something for the uplift of the community work force. All industrial employees unions have always been controlled by the management in South Korea thus far making it impossible for the women work force to actually do something constructive to alleviate the disparity as also the potential dangers of retrenchment and other measures. For the first time, the women have found a voice and this could well be a pioneering achievement of the labour movement in South Korea. The elevation of the industry to a high profile one with the sudden growth of big units has also affected women who are mainly employed in the small and cottage industry. Also, the issue of child welfare and the child work force is uppermost in the labour movement agenda since this affects the women directly and definitely in greater terms that they influence the men. |
