arty launches campaign to cyclone victims

Staff reporter

While the lakhs affected by the cyclone are still awaiting relief and the Orissa government coming a cropper in he face of administrative bungling, the CPI(M) unit of West Bengal has launched an allout drive to gather relief and aid for the victims in the neighbouring state.

The CPI(M) state secretary Anil Biswas has issued a directive to all party units in the state to ensure that the drive gains full momentum and has asked everybody to donate generously for the victims who have now been subjected to Central indifference too considering the paltry relief amount that has been sanctioned by the Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee who made an aerial survey of the cyclone devastated areas on Saturday.

During the Kali Puja festival in Bengal which coincides with the nationwide Diwali, CPI(M) supporters and cadres went from door to door campaigning and requesting for relief for the cyclone victims.

The response has been overwhelming and the state secretariat has congratulated the people for this noble gesture. Reports have come in from districts of Purulia, Bardhaman and even remote areas that the fund collection drive has been extremely noteworthy and significant and that the people need to be congratulated for standing by their brothers in the neighbours in their time of distress. At least a few lakh of rupees and clothes as relief material are being despatched by the party to Orissa by special trucks as also government aid agencies.
