Staff Reporter A pplication of Information Technology (IT) for Rural Development - a round table discussion organised by Forum of Scientist, Engineers & Technologist (FOSET) on 6th November 1999, at the Institute of Engineers (India), Calcutta. The brain storming session is started with the welcome Address by Sri. Sailapati Gupta, President, FOSET, and subsequent key note Address by Dr. Subrata Ganguly, Chairman, WBEIDC.Renowned personalities/officials from WEBAL, NIC, TATA CONSULTANCY SERVICES, TATA INFO TECH, IIM JOKA, CMC, DEPT OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY, ENGG COLLEGES, I.I.T., RESEARCH ORGANISATIONS, MILLENIUM, INSDOC, GLOBESYN TCHNO CAMPUS, CALCUTTA METEOROLOGY CENTRE were present in the discussion. Focal area of the discussions were, how to use 'IT' in the area of AGRICULTURE, HEALTH, EDUCATION, ANIMAL HUSBANDRY, WHEATHER FORECASTING, IMMERGENCY SERVICES, DISASTER MANAGEMENT FINANCIAL CUM COMMERCIAL INFORMATION etc for need based linkage between RURAL PEOPLE/ GRAM PANCHAYETS/ BLOCKS and the RESOURCE CENTRES. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (Computation - data storage - communication - display) Information acquisition - Storage - pre-processing - compression - Transmission - Reception - Interpretation - Applications related to Rural Development.
