Application of Information Technology (IT) for Rural Development - a round table discussion organised by Forum of Scientist, Engineers & Technologist (FOSET) on 6th November 1999, at the Institute of Engineers (India), Calcutta. The brain storming session is started with the welcome Address by Sri. Sailapati Gupta, President, FOSET, and subsequent key note Address by Dr. Subrata Ganguly, Chairman, WBEIDC.

Renowned personalities/officials from WEBAL, NIC, TATA CONSULTANCY SERVICES, TATA INFO TECH, IIM JOKA, CMC, DEPT OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY, ENGG COLLEGES, I.I.T., RESEARCH ORGANISATIONS, MILLENIUM, INSDOC, GLOBESYN TCHNO CAMPUS, CALCUTTA METEOROLOGY CENTRE were present in the discussion.

Focal area of the discussions were, how to use 'IT' in the area of AGRICULTURE, HEALTH, EDUCATION, ANIMAL HUSBANDRY, WHEATHER FORECASTING, IMMERGENCY SERVICES, DISASTER MANAGEMENT FINANCIAL CUM COMMERCIAL INFORMATION etc for need based linkage between RURAL PEOPLE/ GRAM PANCHAYETS/ BLOCKS and the RESOURCE CENTRES.

 CONCLUSIONS

  1. Human Resources Development is essential intones to such requirement, as there are shortage of Manpower in 'IT' areas, who can work and willing to work for rural development. Hence need based curriculum design and Implementation is necessary at the Community Polytechnic level in Bengali Language.
  2. Development of need based state wide area network and software's in Bengali language is essential.
  3. Training and development for the concern Government officials in this respect is essential.
