| NEWSNOTES Callousness in the times of cholera
Staff Reporter Even as the state of Orissa is still reeling under the cyclone after-effects, a relief bus carrying foodstuff and other material for the affected people in the state, was looted in Meerut of Uttar Pradesh. But this is not the only bad news emanating from the stench of Orissa; cholera, gastro diseases and other forms of endemic diseases are sweeping across the state, parts of which are still under water. Carcasses are floating around and there are still areas where relief has still not reached and the Army has failed to gain access. It has been an acute case of failure of the state machinery.Relief has been tardy and chief minister Giridhar Gamang is under fire from all quarters, not the least of them being from his own party with strong speculation that AICC chief Sonia Gandhi may have him removed from the post. Given the widespread discontent at his stewardship of the state in times of calamity. The state committee of the CPI(M) , represented by Biman Bose, Politburo member, has handed over a cheque of Rs 1 lakh to Mr Gamang on behalf of the party. He was accompanied by Orissa party leader Shibaji Patnaik and Janardhana Pati. Mr Bose has said that the contributions from all quarters were pouring in from the districts and party sympathisers and that the CPI(M) would lend a helping hand to the affected people of Orissa as and when the need arose in the future. Relief is being collected in West Bengal and trucks carrying foodstuff, clothes and medicine are reaching the cyclone areas in great numbers. The state leadership of the party has gone to the grassroots level and come out on the streets to collect contributions which has evoked a tremendous response in Bengal. The campaign to collect relief is now in full swing. |
