PI(M) plunges into relief work

From India News Network(INN)

Orissa has faced unprecedented destruction from the severe cyclonic storm. 17 million people in 13 districts have been uprooted from their normal lives. According to incomplete estimates, 20 to 25 thousand people have lost their lives. More than 3 lakh cattle and livestock have perished. 20 lakh acres of paddy crops have been destroyed.

Orissa requires the help of the whole country for reconstruction and rebuilding the lives of the people. Inspite of its limited capacity, the CPI(M) has taken all possible steps to render relief. CPI(M) volunteers first took part in rescue and relief operations. They removed the garbage and cleared the roads and lanes.

The CPI(M) Orissa state committee has setup 17 centres in all the affected districts and more than 70 sub-centres are working under these centres. Medical camps were operated in 82 places and about 30,000 patients were given medicine worth Rs. 10 lakhs. 25 doctors from West Bengal and 6 from Andhra Pradesh alongwith local doctors are working in these medical camps.

Baby food was provided to children in 175 places. About 4 metric tonnes of Amulspray were used by our camps to provide milk to 3 lakhs children. Cooked food is being distributed to the nearby people in all the camps. More than 120 metric tonnes of rice, 50 metric tonnes of potato, chuda, gud are being cooked and distributed. Old clothings, sarees, blankets, polythene, shirts, etc are in the process of distribution.

From West Bengal state committee of the Party, the Orissa state committee has received materials worth over Rs. 1.5 crores including 100 metric tonnes of rice, 50 metric tonnes of potato, Dal, onion, 2 metric tonnes of baby food, 1000 polythene, 2000 sarees, 3700 chadar, 700 shawls, childrens' garments, medicines, candles, match box, utensils, and many other things.

The Orissa state committee has received 5000 blankets, 3,000 sarees, pullovers, 1000 polythene sheets and 2 metric tonnes of Amulspray from the Central Committee of CPI(M) from Delhi.

From Andhra Pradesh state committee of CPI(M), we have received rice, baby food and medicine.

We are planning to set up two to three outdoor medical centres in the affected areas and to reconstruct some schools and colleges.

We appeal to all concerned people and organisations to send their help for the cyclone-affected people to CPI(M) headquarter in Bhubaneswar --- CPI(M) office, 7/13, Unit 9, Bhubaneswar - 751 007. Phone : 0674-406072, 413453. Fax No: 0674-413299.

We are grateful to the people and organisations who have stood by Orissa's affected people. This fraternal help and cooperation is of great help to us.

At the call given by the Federation of Medical Representative Associations of India (FMRAI), its state affiliate, the Orissa Sales Representatives’ Union, is conducting relief work on its own and also in cooperation with the Orissa People’s Relief Committee. Relief materials in form of dry food, medicines, clothes, match boxes, candles, baby food etc. and also money have already been sent by the West Bengal, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh state units of the FMRAI.

Medical representatives of Orissa as well as of the adjacent states along with doctors from Orissa, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh are working in medical camps organised by the CPI(M) and CITU. Such camps are working in slum areas of Cuttack, Paradeep, the worst affected areas of Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Puri, Balasore, Bhadrak, Ganjam and Gajapati districts. These medical teams, equipped with a wide range of modern medicines, were perhaps the first to reach the just-accessible areas in the Erassama block of Jagatsinghpur district like Ambiki, Nagari, Kothi, Sarva, Keyada, Goda, Biswanathpur, Japa, Singipur etc.

Leadership of the Federation rushed to Cuttack and Bhubaneswar immediately after the super cyclone hit the state. D.P. Dubey, general secretary of the FMRAI, has expressed the hope that his organisation will be in a position to mobilise money and .materials worth Rs fifty lakh. Apart from relief work, the FMRAI proposes to organise some rehabilitation work as well, despite its limited means.

Orissa Relief: Manaviyam Collection

Manaviyam Cultural Mission today had its "Orissa Relief Collection" all over the state, through squads of its local leaders and activists. Ministers, leaders of mass organisations, artists, actors etc participated in the squads and collected thousands of rupees through bucket collections. There were twenty-seven such squads in the capital city itself. The total collection by all these squads has not yet come to the central office of the mission. The Orissa relief sponsored by "Deshabhimani" daily of the CPI(M), at the offices of its five editions today, amounted Rs 16,59,621.
