Ashish Senapati, Kendrapada

A month has already passed since the super cyclone struck Orissa. But the woes of the affected people are not receding, thanks to the gross negligence on the part of the state and central governments. Out of 11 affected coastal districts, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Puri are the worst affected. Tidal waves devoured thousands of people in Ersama block of Jagatsinghpur district alone . The most affected seaside gram panchayats under Ersama block are Japa, Ambiki, Panchapalli, Gada Bishanpur, Kunjakotho, Balitutha, Padmapur, Pandoni and Bhitar Andhari. Heart-rending tales of the sufferings of cyclone victims are pouring in. Volunteers of the People's Relief Committee recently rescued one Subash Pal (28) and his younger brother Purna Pal (15) at village Dahibar under Ersama block. Both the brothers lost their 11 family members and became orphans. On November 28, relief committee members rescued a 15 year old girl Reeta Bhuyan, her seven years old brother Sanjay and their mother Satadala Bhuyan. The super cyclone has devoured all other members of their joint family in village Nalabhedi under Gada Bishanpur in Ersama.

The CPI(M)'s state secretary Janardan Pati, Kendrapara district secretary Umesh Chandra Singh and district secretariat member Nalini Tripathy recently visited the affected areas of Ersama, Jambu, Suniti and Mahakalpara. They also visited the house of Mantu Maiti, a Party leader who perished in the super cyclone at village Nalabhedi. Comrade Mantu was in Nalabhedi to attend the obsequious of one of his relatives.

In Japa panchayat, Janardan Pati and others met sarpanch Kulamani Das, who told them that about 6,000 people has perished in Japa panchayat alone. Out of 160 students, 114 were swept away in Janagiri upper primary school under Gada Bishan gram panchayat. Dead silence reigns in these cyclone-hit villages. A large number of villages are still cut off from the mainland. Many affected people are suffering from diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases. CPI(M) medical teams from West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh are treating patients in the affected areas. They treated about 5,000 people in Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts within a week.

After two to three days of the cyclone, many survivors reportedly starved to death. Chandan Manna, a school teacher and CPI(M) member of village Bada Dandupur, lost his married sister, her husband and ten family members. Janardan Pati met Chandan Manna in his village. The People's Relief Committee is providing free meals, medicines, blankets and other items in these affected areas also. The Party has opened camps at Pokharipada, Padori, Pandua, Alana, Jalabedi, Junagiri, Narasinghpur and Dasamatha in Jagatsinghpur district. The People's Relief Committee and CPI(M) teams led by Pati and district secretary Umesh Chandra Singh are providing help to the affected people in the camps organised at Suniti, Benakanda, Kansara Badadndua, Siko, Olavar, Gadagadi Ghat Badapada, Sana Jharia, Chandannager, Purusottampur, Naranapur and urban areas in Kendrapara district. The CPI(M) state secretary and the district secretary also visited sites in Ersama and Suniti where the Party is planning to build cyclone shelters.
