| NEWS NOTES History on View Staff Reporter C alcutta's history will be on view at the historic Town Hall where the museum is being upgraded by the Corporation. The mayor Prasanta Chatterjee has said that the Centre has refused to sanction money for this but keeping in mind the demands of the new millennium, the state government would generate resources to enable the scheme to take off. It is likely that by April, the new museum will be open for the public.Chatterjee said that historians and scholars have been roped in to ensure that the programme becomes a highpoint on the tourists' agenda in the City of Joy. he said that the British deputy high commissioner Rob Young had visited the Twon hall and said that he would do everything possible to ensure that his government helped out with contributions of which there is no dearth in Britain. The Victoria Memorial authorities in Calcutta have also been sounded out to return artefacts and bust statuettes of famous residents of this city which had been taken from the Town Hall either on loan or as gifts. The Memorial response is awaited but it is expected that all agencies involved in keeping and making Calcutta a history-happy metropolis will lend a helping hand. |
