Christmas was celebrated throughout Bengal with the usual gaiety and fervour but this time was different as this was the last Christmas of the Millennium. Now the city of Calcutta waits the big millennium bash with more than 6,000 non-resident Indians expected to converge in the city for the Biswa Banga Sammelan which will take off from December 28.

The state government has taken up the event in right earnest as it will also provide for interaction with the best brains abroad so that the state can attract more investments. Seminars and discussions are being planned for the millennium and the city is expected to rise to the occasion and make the party an event to remember.

Most of Bengal’s proud sons will be on show and the Eden gardens will be the venue of a laser show on the night of December 31 when a giant laser-induced sun will shine in its glory heralding the advent of a new age and time.

The tourism department has also packed in a lot and trips to the Sunderbans and Darjeeling have been organized to make the coming of the millennium an incident to remember. All in all, before the year is out, it will be a new Calcutta which will ready itself for a new era..
