
| NEWS NOTES Waiting for the Millennium
Staff Reporter C hristmas was celebrated throughout Bengal with the usual gaiety and fervour but this time was different as this was the last Christmas of the Millennium. Now the city of Calcutta waits the big millennium bash with more than 6,000 non-resident Indians expected to converge in the city for the Biswa Banga Sammelan which will take off from December 28.The state
government has taken up the event in right earnest as it will also provide for interaction
with the best brains abroad so that the state can attract more investments. Seminars and
discussions are being planned for the millennium and the city is expected to rise to the
occasion and make the party an event to remember. Most of
Bengals proud sons will be on show and the Eden gardens will be the venue of a laser
show on the night of December 31 when a giant laser-induced sun will shine in its glory
heralding the advent of a new age and time. The tourism
department has also packed in a lot and trips to the Sunderbans and Darjeeling have been
organized to make the coming of the millennium an incident to remember. All in all, before
the year is out, it will be a new Calcutta which will ready itself for a new era. |
