Results of elections to municipal corporations, councils and panchayats in Madhya Pradesh have come in. BJP, which had recently cornered two third seats in Lok Sabha elections is trailing behind Congress. BJP fared better in urban areas although Congress snatched Bhopal Mayoral seat from BJP. In semi urban and semi rural areas, however, the Congress is well ahead of the BJP.

CPI(M) has registered several maiden victories in these elections. Party gained success especially in Gwalior--Chambal region. In Bhind district CPI(M) district secretary Prem Narayan Mahore achieved spectacular win for the chairmanship of Gohad municipal council by polling 41% votes. Congress polled 30% and BJP 17% votes. Two other comrades, Rajendra Kushwah and Guddi Bai also won as a member of council.

In Morena district the chairman ship of Kailaras city panchayat has also been bagged by CPI(M). Party state committee member Ashok Tiwari defeated Congress rival on this seat. In this same body Com. Shiela Jatav and Bhagwan Das Gupta also won as member. Some of the independents who won have also joined party. In the same district CPI(M) leader Murari Lal Dhakad lost only 331 votes for the chairman ship of Sabalgarh municipla council.

In Gwalior municipal corporation CPI(M) bagged two seats. Party state committee member Ramvilas Goswami and JMS district joint secretary won for corporator seats. In the constituency where JMS leader won. Vidhya Ram, district secretariat member of party was murdered on the polling by landlord goons. In Gwalior district CPI(M) candidate Pran Singh Millan also won in one ward of Billowa city panchayat.

In Rewa municipal corporation CPI(M) candidate Hajra Begam defeated Congress for the seat of corporator. In the same district CPI(M) also bagged chairmanship of Sirmor city panchayat. In Jabalpur district party district committee member Anjana Kurariya defeated BJP in won war Sihora municipal council.

CITU leader and a coal worker Amritlal Vishwakarma also won ward of Brisingpur city panchayat in Umariya district.

In Kanker district CPI(M) candidate for the chairmanship of municipal council came second and one won from a ward. Some more result are still awaited. At many places CPI(M) candidates lost by an extremely narrow margin. CPI(M) candidate Krashna Singh lost by seven votes only in Dewas municipal council. In several constituencies CPI(M) polled substantial votes for the first time..
