Ed was celebrated on Sunday in West Bengal with the usual fervour and there were no incidents of any violence anywhere or untoward developments. The Id moon was sighted late on saturday evening and as soon as word spread, the shutters went up on business establishments throughout the city of Calcutta and people flocked to the streets even late as on midnight to do late purchases and last-minute shopping. The holiday saw crowds thronging the zoo , the museum and other usual spots with the zoo recording a huge turnout. Sweets were distributed in many areas of the city and the chief minister Jyoti Basu as well as the Governor's office sent out Id messages of cheer to people of the state.
