The Centre has removed Congress president and Rajiv Gandhi's widow Sonia Gandhi from the post of chairperson of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts. In a simultaneous move, 15 trustees appointed by Mrs Gandhi to the governing body of the Centre have been ousted and new members appointed.Mrs Gandhi however remains as one of the turstees of the Centre.

Among the new trustees are former President R.Venkataraman, musician Bhimsen Joshi, singer Bhupen Hazarika and dancer Sonal Mansingh. Those who have gone include Natwar Singh, M.S.Subbhalaxmi, Ram Niwas Mirdha and Sam Pitroda.

The Congress has refused to comment on the developments and there has been no word from Mrs gandhi's office either. The former Prime Minister P.V.Narasimha Rao has also not commented .
