Report

Six-year-old Cuban boy Elian Gonsalves has to perforce remain in the US despite worldwide protests and a decision by the American government to send him bak to his homeland. However, the parliamentary committee of the US has now put spokes in the return by raising the question of legalese by which his homecoming has been necessarily delayed, thus deepening the crisis without solving it.

The Republican member Dan Burton has categorically said that Gonsalves cannot return to Cuba unless the court case is disposed of and said that while everybody was aware of the trauma that the little boy was facing, this was a serious political issue which could not be handled by economic parameters alone.

Meanwhile, the entire world has been shocked by the attitude of the US government in handling the Cuban crisis and has been aghast at the way in which the Americans made politics out of the boy’s dilemma. President Bill Clinton has gone public to say that he saw no politics in the matter but the latest setback to the boy’s return quite amply shows how the US machinery is used to subvert the freedom which it boasts of at every international forum.
