THANKS TO THE UNITY

Last week, country witnessed two major events of new form of workers' struggle.

Being failed to break the nation-wide united and continuous strike of the port and dock workers' even with the help of military, the government has ultimately came to an agreement with the five national federations. The strike has been concluded with written assurance from the government that the issues raised by the five national federations would be discussed and settled by 28 February at bipartite level. The government also agreed that no action would be taken against the workers for participating in the strike.

About 87 thousand workers, employees and officers in power sector in UP, despite severe repression like arrests, dismissal, threats etc., are continuing their strike against the decision of the state government for dissolution of the state electricity board and its conversion into three corporations. More than 6,000 have been arrested and more than hundred engineers have been sacked. In support of the striking workers. In support of the striking workers, the power workers, employees and engineers are observing nation-wide protest strike today.

The common in both the events is the firm unity of the working class in the struggles against the onslaughts of the ruling class on the toiling people in general and the working class in particular.

Thanks to the unity of the struggling workers, which is much needed today for the success against the adverse impact of the policy of globalisation and liberalism.

24th January, 2000.
