The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) has called for a one-week's countrywide campaign from February 16 to 23 to protest against the BJP-led government's irresponsible and motivated refusal to send sufficient security forces to Tripura to help the state government to combat the extremist violence. For the past few months, the extremist groups have intensified their activities of killings, kidnappings and extortions. This is part of a calculated plan to foment discord amongst the tribal and non-tribal people and to promote their separatist aims. The Left Front government of Tripura is taking a firm stand against such violent activities and the CPI(M) is constantly mobilising the people to foil the game of the extremist forces to disturb communal amity.

Despite repeated requests by the State Government, the BJP-led government has refused to deploy additional security forces which are essential to check the cross border movements of the terrorist groups and to protect the lives of ordinary citizens.

The Polit Bureau in its meeting held in Calcutta from January 14-16 decided that the Party should launch a campaign to protest against the Central government's harmful role and to express solidarity with the people of Tripura.

The one-week campaign will be held from February 16-23, 2000. During this period, mass dharnas will be conducted outside Central government offices in all the states. During the Parliament session, MPs and representatives of the Left Front from Tripura will hold a dharna at New Delhi to highlight the demand that the Centre stop playing politics and dispatch sufficient forces to Tripura immediately.
