| Thank you Mr. President; but . I n his address to the nation, on the eve of the Golden Jubilee of Indian Republic, President Shri. K.R. Naryanan cautioned the Government about what he called "the fury of the patient and long suffering people." He did not mince words when he said "our three way fast lane of liberalization, privatization and globalization must provide safe pedestrian crossings for the unempowered India also so that it too can move towards equality of status and opportunity."Who are these pedestrians in todays India? The millions of our fellow citizens who form worlds largest number of illiterates, largest number of people poverty line and largest of number of children suffering from malnutrition apart from about 40 million registered unemployed young men and women. The "three way fast lane" is oblivious of their existence. They may be run over, leave aside safe crossing to sustain liberalization and globalization. Otherwise how can the present Govt. backed and sponsored by national and global financial capital, talk day in day out of a "subsidy less" economy and "job less" all growth. The Govt. of the day which is supposed to police the "three way fast lane" is in active collusion with the biggest traffic law breakers the Indian Corporates/MNCS involved in tax evasion, money laundering in and out side the country, defaulting of bank loans etc. with the result that social control by the State, so essential for what the President rightly calls as the "safe pedestrian crossing" remains elusive to the vast majority of this country. Thank you Mr. President but would this Govt. of the corporates, by the corporates and for the corporates, listen to your same advice? 31st January, 2000. |
