| NEWSNOTES Statute change to be opposed: Basu
By Special Correspondent T he West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu has said that the country should stand united behind the move against changing the Constitution of India since the BJP was yet again trying to fragment the nation on the basis of religion. The chief minister said that he did not understand on what basis the BJP government was keen on a review of the Constitution and that he firmly believed that this was just a ploy to divide the nation yet again on matters religious. ``No Hindu seer has ever said that it is good to intolerant towards other religions. This is just a thesis made up by these political leaders of the BJP for narrow political gains. It is this same mindset which is keen on a review of the Constitution. We should all stand firmly united against such a move,'' he said in Calcutta. The chief minister said that the Constitution said unequivocally that India was a secular state and that there was no room for any discrimination in this country on the basis of religion. ``If the review of the Constitution is made an excuse to indulge in religion-based politics, then the labour movement of the country shall receive a major setback. All right-thinking men should oppose this,'' he said. Basu said that under the BJP regime, the rich were getting richer and the poor poorer.``Only 15 per cent of the people are enjoying all the advantages. And by bringing in the matter of religion into this, the BJP is making things worse. This is definitely more dangerous that what the Congress had been doing.'' The chief minister also said that the Left Front government in West Bengal had proved to be a great source of encouragement and inspiration for all the labour movements in the world who had appreciated the uninterrupted tenure of the state government for 23 long years.``This is a record and we are naturally proud of it. But we should not be complacent and ensure that we go from strength to strength,'' he added. |
