The Union Budget is to be placed in Parliament on February 29. The Budget session will begin on February 23 and continue till May 17. The Railways Budget will be placed on February 25 while the Economic Survey will be placed on February 28.The various standing committees of the ministries will go into the Budget proposals between the adjourned session period of March 17 and April 16.

Meanwhile, the petroleum minister Ram Naik has indicated that there will be a sharp increase in the prices of kerosene. He said that such a step was necessary to check the adulteration of diesel and petrol in the market since there was a tendency on the part of dishonest traders to mix kerosene with petrol since there was a sharp difference in the prices of the two fuels.

It is also being felt that the public distribution system may be kept out of the reach of a majority of middleclass income groups since there has been a government statement saying that the PDS will be available only to the poorest of the poor.
