| NEWSNOTES Commission For Constitutional Review Uncalled For
From India News Network(INN) T he Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement:Despite widespread opposition, the Vajpayee government has announced the decision to constitute an 11 member National Commission to review the Constitution. The Union Cabinet while taking this decision has announced the terms of reference. The BJP has been forced to retreat from its effort to utilise the Commission to discuss the presidential form of government. The Cabinet resolution states that there will be no change in the basic structure of the Constitution. In that case there is no purpose for a overall review and the government should initiate any specific amendments through parliament. The CPI(M) has maintained that a Commission set up by an executive decision will have no legitimacy in undertaking such a review. Only parliament is authorised to initiate any changes in the Constitution. The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) therefore reiterates its opposition to such a review through a Commission. |
