It was a day of immense satisfaction and excitement for the people of Calcutta as well as of Bengal when, the Energy Education Park, the first of its kind in India, was dedicated to the nation by Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal on 28th January 2000. It indeed is a commendable attainment of WBREDA, DST, Government of West Bengal and Calcutta Municipal Corporation, West Bengal Pollution Control Board and Ministry of Non-conventional Energy Sources, Government of India shares the pride having been associated with this project since inception.

Hon’ble Chief Minister and other dignitaries, during inauguration, while applauding this pioneering initiative have v ventilated many interesting ideas and suggestion for further improvement of this park and also have stressed upon the urgent need for proper maintenance and upgradation of the same. It has also been proposed by GOI representative present in the function, that this may even be considered for confirming the status of National Energy Park.

The world is facing a great challenge in the energy sector. We are at present depending upon conventional methods of energy generation by burning fossil fuels. But the fossil fuel reserves will not last beyond a few decades and they cause grave environmental pollution. With the depletion of fossil fuel mankind will face energy crisis. This message has not reached the common people. Even a large section of the educated remain unaware of this serious problem. We still suffer from energy complacency at all levels. Energy Education Park aims at generating awareness in students and common people in the use renewable energy sources and energy conservation techniques, through interactive exhibits and audio visual communication systems.

The Park situated on the Eastern Metropolitan Bye-Pass near Park Circus connector opposite to Science City has built up exhibits presetting various use of Non-conventional Energy Sources.

  1. Main Hydel Power Plant
  2. Solar Street Lights
  3. Gasifier Plant using Biomass
  4. Models on conversion of Energy
  5. Biogas Plant

The park was made interesting by introducing puzzles on energy quiz and joy of leaving process for being exposed to various aspects of energy use. It has live demonstration of solar hut, a shelter unit comprising of solar powers TV, lights, refrigerator and other appliances. An interesting exhibition was set up on "Energy – past, present and future" along with demonstration of Global Energy Network. The park will serve as an institution for education, entertainment, training on energy.
