
| NEWS NOTES CPI(M) wins two bypolls in Bengal
Staff Reporter T he CPI(M) has won handsomely in the two byelections to the Nabagram and Siuri Assembly seats while the Congress-backed Jharkhand Party has retained the reserved Binpur seat. The Congress had won the Siuri and Nabagram seats in the last Assembly seats while Binpurhas been with the Jharkhand. The CPI(M) state committee secretary Anil Biswas said that it was heartening.to note that the paryy had been able to recover lost ground in Nabagram and Siuri while the CPI(M) had fared remarkably well in Binpur in the face of constant attacks and terror.Incidentally, the Trinamool Congress had got only one-third of the votes it had polled in the segment in the last Lok sabha elections.Biswas also said that the disinformation campaign by the press had been exposed since these papers had surveyed the constituencies and predicted a definite loss for the CPI(M). The CI(M) candidate in Siuri, Braja Mukherjee, has got 62,093 votes while the Trinamool nominee Suniti Chattoraj has received 44,972 votes. In the 1996 Assembly elections, Chattoraj had won by more than 6,000 votes.. In nabagram, the party candidate Nripen Choudhury has won by 8,307 votes while the Congress nominee Shyamal rai has got 54,339 votes. The Trinamool candidate has fared dismally with only 8,707 votes. This seat had been held by the Congress leader and now MP, Adhir Choudhury, a known antisocial of the Behrampore belt. The Jharkhand nominee backed by the Congress, Chunibala Hansda, has got 12,410 more votes than the CPI(M) candidate Dibakar Hansda in the Binpur seat, the repoll having been necessiated by the death of Naren Hansda. |
