Geeta Mukherjee.jpg (3014 bytes)Comrade Geeta Mukherjee, veteran communist leader and secretary of the National Council of the CPI died this morning at her residence in Vithalbhai Patel House. She was 77. Her body has been taken to Calcutta by a special Indian Airforce flight. On hearing the news, Harkishan Singh Surjeet, S. Ramachandran Pillai, P. Ramachandran, Prakash Karat and Sitaram Yechury went to her residence and laid a wreath on behalf of the Central Committee of the Party. President K.R. Narayan, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, Chief Minister Jyoti Basu have condoled her death. Those who went to pay homage included Mohd. Salim, general secretary of the DYFI, A. Vijayaraghavan, general secretary of the AIAWA, Tapan Sen, secretary of the CITU, Brinda Karat, general secretary of AIDWA, and Krishna Prasad, president of the SFI etc.

Harkishan Singh Surjeet, general secretary, CPI(M) in his condolence message said that she was a leader who kept close links with the working people and was always in the forefront in championing their cause. She will always be remembered for her exemplary life and affection for all her fellow comrades. Her death at this juncture is a big loss for the CPI and the Left movement.

OBITUARY

Geeta Mukherjee was born on 8th January 1923 a Jessorhore of undivided Bengal. She was a brilliant student during school & college days. She joined in the students movement and got the membership in the Communist Party of India. She has been elected to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in 1967 and again she got elected to the Parliament in the year 1980. She is the member of the Parliament till date and also the member of the Central Secretariat of CPI. Though out her life she participated in the democratic movements in the country and a legendary figure in the women’s movement for social cause. Her husband Biswanath Mukherjee was also a prominent leader of CPI.

The All India Democratic Women’s Association deeply mourns the passing away of Comrade Geeta Mukherjee, veteran leader and indefatigable champion of women’s struggles for justice. In her untimely death, women have lost their brightest light in parliament, their strongest voice, their fearless defender Geeta di as she was affectionately called. Worked for over sixty years for the rights of the poor and the oppressed in particularly, the rights of women.

The AIDWA pays deep homage to this veteran and pioneering communist leader who dedicated her whole life to the cause of the poor, of women. She will always live in the struggles of women for justice . AIDWA extends its heartfelt condolences to her bereaved family and to all her colleagues and comrades in the nation federation of India

The Centre of Indian Trade Unions expresses its deep sense of sorrow at the sudden passing away of Com. Gita Mukherjee, a veteran parliamentarian of the Communist Party of India who breathed her last this morning while preparing to go to Aligarh for a lecture against communalism.

Joining the student movement in early forties Com. Gita Mukherjee devoted her entire life for the cause of toiling masses. A devoted fighter for the liberation of women, she played a notable role in the women’s movement in India.

Com. Gita Mukherjee’s passing away is a big loss to the left and democratic movement in India. Her simplicity in day to day life will always be cherished by those who knew her personality.
