eepa Mehta is accused of lifting from Sunil Ganguly's Book

Staff Reporter

Water director Deepa Mehta rushed to Calcutta on Saturday and met writer Sunil Ganguly from whose Shei Shomoy (Those Days) she is alleged to have pinched situations, names and even descriptions without acknowledging the debt. The writer was his usual affable self and said that he would not sue the director but did not know what his publishers would do. The publishers, Ananda, have said that legal action was on the cards and that one would be going through the script first.

Which brings us to an interesting point. Deepa has said that that the master copy of the script was with deputy chief minister Buddhadev Bhattacharya and that she did not have the spare copy for Sunil. The translator of Shei Shomoy, Aruna Chakrabarty, has said in Delhi that while the similarities in the Bengali original could be missed, the translation was evidence how the director had lifted passages in to to. She said that she had couriered a copy of the similarities drawn up by her to the writer and that it was strange that the filmmaker, who said that she was inspired by the translation, did not have a courtesy to show the writer a script of the film since there were obvious similarities.

Deepa in her turn said she was indeed inspired by the Shei Shomoy but so was she by epics like War And Peace and Crime And Punishment. The question , however, which goes abegging is simple: are there similarities in Water with the two western epics? Does War and Peace talk about widows in Vrindaban, Ms Mehta?
