Government might ban rallies and demonstration against Clinton tclinton prot.jpg (23389 bytes)o please the US but Come what may the left parties will hold protest demonstration against President Clinton when he visit India. This was said by CPI (M) General Secretary Harkishan Singh Surjeet addressing a press conference here along with CPI (M) politburo member Prakash Karat, D. Raja (CPI), Abani Roy (RSP) and Debabrata Biswas(Forward Bloc) in A.K. G. Bhawan today. Government had ban holding of any kind of protest, dharnas, demonstrations, rallies during the President visit. Left parties have had announced joined protest demonstration from Mandi house to USIS in Kasturba Gandhi Marg on 21st March the day when his visit was starting officially. Today a letter was send by DCP of Delhi police about the Government decision to the Delhi state party informing about their decision.

Surjeet said that, even during the time when Soviet Union was there such thing never happened. Even against them peaceful demonstration was announced. Now they are so much eager to please the Americans that they have taken such a decision. He said that Pakistan announced such a decision and the government of India is doing the same.

Surjeet said that every day the external affairs ministry is making all sort of statements. The way they are doing, the US has been allowed to bring hundreds of monies, it gives such a picture as if the Indian government is not capable to provide security to Clinton. Moreover, thousands of police have been brought. What is happening in the Maurya Sheraton is everybody to see. Surjeet said that already the Kashmir issues have been internationlise, it was soon so when Clinton made the comment that he will take personal interest on that. Huge time and money was spent on by our external affairs minister Jaswant Singh requesting the amerians not go to Pakistan which he is going. This BJP government is totally succumbing to the dictates and pressure of the Americans jeorpardising the country sovereignty, Surjeet said. They have made the country impression as if "we are stooges of the US". Even democracy is being throttle to please them which is shown from their decision to have ban on even peaceful demonstration. Never such thing has happened before.

They are bowing and began to US where as US sanctions on India is yet to be lifted, they are resorting to curbs on technology, interfering in the Kashmir and that they have done in Iraq is well know. Even then the government is bent upon to please him

He said come what may, we are not afraid of all this thing, we have fought the British’s, fought also when there was attempt to take away the rights of the people.

We will fight against them and our leaders and cadres will organise protest against him

We have also jointly written to the home minister on this issue.

Raja said that the as it is Delhi police which comes under the Home ministry had announced this ban we have written to him.

Debabrta Biswas said that it reminds one of the times of emergency.

Abani Roy said in Agra it has been reported in the newspaper that they will not allow people even to peep from their windows during his visit to that city,

Prakash Karat said that yesterday in Hyderabad chief minister Chandra Babu Naidu had called a meeting of all political parties in which he requested the parties not to have any sort of demonstrations as his visit according to him is not a political visit but only a visit on High-Tec. Which ofcourse we and other left parties did not agree .He said in that case will ban protest and is going ahead with that. We have also decided that we will protest against him when he visit Hyderbad. We are also contacting other parties in that state. Prakash said that on 21st there will be demonstration in Delhi and also on the same day such demonstration will be organise in all state capitals. Whenever Clinton will got, in Agra, Jaipir, Hyderabad and in Mumai huge demonstration will be organised on the day of the visit.

Asked that what is wrong if they are bringing their own security as our own security has failed to protect our own Prime ministers. The left leaders pointed out that in that case even they have failed to protect their own leaders like Kennedys. Surjeet said it was understable it few securities come but the number is coming is huge.

Asked what the left members of parliament will do when he will address the parliament. Surjeet said our members of parliament will be busy outside, if they are banning the meeting demonstraions outside do you thing our people will be attending those. Moreover the meetings is just a lecture organised to please Clinton. Neither it is joint session in that case the meeting will be called by chairman or speaker nor it has any other officials. It is just a lecture which Vajpayee and is men can listen. Why should we. The left leaders made it categorical that they will keep away from all the officials functions and ceremonies connected with US president visit. Karat said that during the visit of each head of the states etc we get lot of invitation, it is upto us to attend or not to attend .In this case also it will be like that We will not be attending.

Meanwhile in a letter to LK Advani union home minister , jointly written by Surjeet, Raja (CPI),Biswas(FB) and Abani Roy(RSP) said during then visit of president , the left parties had decided to organise protest demonstration focussing on the US policies which adversely affect India. You must be aware that the US sanctions on India, curbs on technology, interference in the Kashmir issue and attempts to prise upon markets in favour of US multinationals have been a cause for widespread concern in the country. These issues have raised in public forums both inside and outside parliament. It is normal in a democratic country for political parties to organsie peaceful protest actions against the policies of a country whose head of state come on an official visit.

'We were therefore shocked to know that the Delhi police authorities have refused permission for a demonstration to be organised by the "Committee Against US Imperialism", on March 21. The Delhi Police Commissioner has announced that no demonstration will be allowed in the city in connection with Clinton visit. Since the Delhi Police is directly under the union government, we presume that this has been done with the approval of the union home ministry.'.

They said," you must be aware that the Pakistan government has announced a ban on all-political meetings and rallies just a few days ago. There is a military regime in our neighbouring country. Are we following in their footsteps?

On behalf of the left parties, we strongly protest this blanket ban on demonstrations in the capital and demand that permission be given immediately for the protest rally in New Delhi, on March 21. If the government fails to adopt a democratic attitude in this matter, the committee formed in Delhi will go ahead with the planned demonstration to express the views of the Indian people on the hostile attitude of the American government.

Meanwhile, Northern Zone Insurance Employees Association has also condemn the undemocratic action of the government to ban the rallies and protest demonstration during Clinton visit. S.R Saini General Secretary in a statement said that we also appeal to the good sense of all democratic and patriotic people of Delhi to rise to the occasion and exhibit in clear terms to the powers that be that they bot tolerate throttling of democracy and will defend their freedom at all costs.
