
| NEWSNOTES VP Singh announces first victory for the Delhi's poor
from: Aroop Sen N EW DELHI, 26th March: at a huge meeting of residents of the demolition targeted jhuggi jhopri areas in Wazirpur this morning, former prime minister Viswanath Pratap Singh announced that the railway ministry has informed him that the demolition had been stopped and that talks would be held with the central government and for alternatives sites. It may be pointed out that yesterday night was the second night spent by the former prime minister in jhuggi basti protesting against Government policies on jhuggi jhopri. Along with him Delhi Party secretary Puspendra Singh Grewal also spend the night along with the jhuggi jhopri dwellers.In today morning meeting which again turned out to be large as thousands of people from various jhuggi jhopri dwellings also came in streams , was addressed by CPI(M) leaders Jogendra Sharma, Brinda Karat, RJD Rajya Sabha member Saroj Dubey and former Lok sabha speaker Rabi Ray. Singh said that the attitude towards jhuggi cluster would have to be change. They are not an eyesore to the landscape. On the country the part of Delhi which had been built using black money is called clean Delhi. Where as the section built purely on had earned white money is now being termed dirty. What do you do with this persons throw them into the sea. If we give them work in our city we should also give them shelter, he said. There were also anti Mamata Banerjee slogans from the gatherings. All the leaders and also the big gathering endorsed the proposal made by VP Singh that in view of the assurance the indefinite dharna would be lifted but that every evening a meeting would be held from 5.30 pm to 9.pm. The residents who had turned up in large number including hundreds of women. Applauded the speakers when they strongly criticised the inhuman approach of there railway minister Mamata Banerjee who had ordered the eviction without any discussions with the residents or offering them alternative sites. The next date for the hearing in the Delhi High court is a writ petition is on March 31.The demand is tht the government at the center and the tae should give a letter to the court asking for time to finalise the rehabilitation package. Only after the rehabilitation package is ensured will the struggle end. Leaders present also declared that the struggle will be taken to all jhuggi colonies in Delhi to ensure a fair and just policy for the poor in Delhi who constitute a majority of the population. |
