As the inmates refused to open the door, the extremists immediately started setting the houses aflame leading to the blaze in which 15 other houses were burnt down. When the inmates of the affected houses scampered out to escape being burnt alive, the gunmen fired a random, killing four people on the spot including an 8 year old child and a 73 year old woman and injuring a 60 year old woman who has since been hospitalised. CPI(M) leaders including panchayat minister Subodh Das and the local MLA Anil Chakma rushed to the spot to look after the affected people and arrange immediate government relief. An all-out 12 hour bandh was observed yesterday throughout the Pecharthal bloc area at the call of the CPI(M) and protest demonstration and meeting was held in the afternoon at Pecharthal addressed by Subodh Das among several others. In separate statements the CPI(M) and the chief minister Manik Sarkar vehemently condemned the dastardly and devilish extremist attack on innocent people, men and women, child and old. The CPI(M) views this incident as part of the heinous conspiracy to destabilise the state ahead of the upcoming elections to the Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), a deep-laid conspiracy contributed to by the absence of requisite central assistance fuelling and furthering extremist barbarity in the state aimed at derailing the ADC poll process. The party exhorts the centre once again to dispatch adequate central security forces as per state government requisition. Chief minister Manik Sarkar says that such heinous attack testify to the extremists absolute disrespect for human rights in their barbaric bid to spark ethnic split and spite and stall developmental programmes. The ever alert and aware people of the state will foil this extremist bid, the chief minister emphasised. |
