CPI(M) MPs, invited to a function by railways minister Mamata Banerjee in Bankura and Purulia on Saturday, were insulted by her supporters in front of the minister herself during the inaugural of two trains at government functions in these two places.

Mamata, however, did try to make amends in her own way when her supporters tried to heckle CP(M) MP Basudev Acharia and the state health minister Partha Dey at the function in Bankura when she openly told her men that she would ``whip them’’ if they did not calm down. Their contention had no merit; why were the Left leaders present at a Trinamool function? Not many of them obviously understood that it was a government function in which the two state Left leaders had as much of a role to play as the railways minister, Trinamooleshwari Mamata.

However, being more loyal than the king, so to say, the Trinamool supporters went on with their reckless behaviour making it impossible for the function to end peacefully and without ugly scenes.

The two Left leaders did speak , but only for brief periods , making it obvious that all the pronouncements of the minister that she was not willing to mix politics and development are basically what all her words are: pure bunkum. If a minister cannot hold a motley flock at bay, how can she possibly even think of keeping a state under her control?
