| NEWSNOTES Import policy a sham: Left
From India News Network(INN) T he Left has strongly criticised the import policy and said that the policy was against everything that the country stood for.The CPI(M) politburo, in a statement, said that the policy was meant to help the US interests and multinationals and that the working class as well as the middle class and small entrepreneurs would be affected. The industrialisation of the country would also receive a setback, it said. The CPI(M) said that 714 items had been exempted from controls and that another 700 were on the list which would be effective from April next year. Small farmers as well as entrepreneurs would be badly affected, it said. Diary items had been brought under the Open General Licence (OGL) and producers were not getting the right price for these items in the market, thus suffering losses. The party said that the government had also made false promises regarding anti-dumping measures and that the operational measures on the anti-dumping sector were not adequate though the government was not doing anything about it. And anyway, the party said, despite the hype created by the so-called liberalisation programmes of the government, the economy had not received any boost in any area or sector, thereby clearly indicating the fallacies of any argument in favour of such policies. |
