Privatisation of
Steel Plants
From India News
Network(INN)
G overnment of India has
decided to privatise two major steel plants in India. These are the Salem Steel Plant and
Alloy Steel Plant. In view of the fact that the Salem Steel Plant rolls the ingots
produced in Alloy Steel Plant the privatsiation of former will ultimately lead to the
closure of Alloy Steel Plant. The government has further decided to privatise power plants
of three major steel plants, fertiliser plant in Rourkela and the Oxygen plant in Bhilai.
All these are having serious fall outs in the development process and destabilise
economies of number of states. But in no case government has discussed the matter with the
concerned state government. All the more surprising is the fact that neither the Steel
ministry nor the government of India has informed the Standing Committee about such a
vital decision. It is being speculated that this decision is taken in pursuance of the
recommendation of a consultant based in America known as M/s Mecenzy. Unfortunately, the
government has not circulated the reports of the consultant too. CPI(M) MP Jiban Roy has
lodged a strong protest against this move. |
