Thousands protests

Report

The car giant BMW’s decision to sell its Rover unit has been met with fierce protests from all over the United Kingdom with 50,000 workers and activists on Saturday taking to the streets in Birmingham alone to take up the cause. The protesters have demanded that Rover cannot be sold off, thus jeopardising the fate and livelihood of thousands of workers. If Rover is sold, then 4,000 workers of the Longbridge factory in Birmingham will face an uncertain future.

Another piece of bad news for car workers in Britain is the decision of the Japanese Honda company to cut down on its staff in the only factory they have in the island kingdom. Honda officials announced on Saturday that the company was planning to halve the number of workers at the Swingdon factory in Britain.

The Brimingham protest was unique because such a protest has not been held in Britain for many years in which not only trade union workers but representatives from the clergy as well as the entertainment world took part.
