| NEWS NOTES Cong in Catch22
Staff Reporter The Congress is caught in a cleftstick with the high command making it clear that there is no question of working with the BJP at any level while some West Bengal unit leaders have openly sounded out the possibility of forging an alliance with the Trinamool Congress with the saffron party as an ally. All this is aimed at the Left Front and the wish to dislodge it from power; however, with the confusion gaining ground every day, this may remain a pipedream and the possibility of a unified opposition fighting the Left will by its very amorphous nature whittle down to just a few noises. The Congress president Sonia Gandhi has made it clear that she will have nothing to do with the BJP though at the same time, she has said that the party was open to a mahajot with the Trinamool. On the other hand, West Bengal Congress unit chief A.B.A.Ghani Khan Choudhury has already met Mamata Banerjee in Delhi and has been given the assurance that he will be projected as chief minister in the event of a mahajot actually getting off ground. His joy knows no bounds and he is already being quoted as having promised jobs to all and sundry once he actually enters Writers Buildings. The BJP issue, however, the begs the question right now. The AICC general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad has made it clear the BJP will not be a part of the mahajot while the Congress spokeman Ajit Jogi has made it amply clear that his party shares the same view. Thus, if Ghani Khan is actually having visions of ruling Bengal, he should first sort out this issue with Mamata Banerjee; because while Banerjee may not be in a position to sever links with the BJP right now, the Congress has to make clear its stand to the people before it goes out to ask for votes in the name of the mahajot. The people of Bengal are no fools, they know exactly how to treat fortune-seekers and opportunists. On the other hand, if the state unit of the Congress actually splits with Priya Ranjan Das Munshi and Ghani Khan ranged against each other, we can all surmise as to the nature of the vote division in the next division. The Congress shall remain what it is: a house perennially divided. And Mamata will continue to be what she is: an opportunist whose only rationale for political activity has always been a virulent anti-CPI(M) war cry. The people of Bengal are no fools. They will see through the mahajot and unravel the knots once the Election Day comes at hand. |
