Report

THE Mainstream is a magazine which has specialised in slandering the CPI(M) for a long time. Under the editorship of Sumit Chakravarthy it has now taken its anti-CPI(M) stance to new heights. In its March 18 issue the editor has written an editorial which is downright scurrilous. Writing about the dispute which arose between the CPI(M) and the CPI on the fifth Rajya Sabha seat from West Bengal, the editorial bemoans the fact that the CPI tamely surrendered to the CPI(M) on the issue. It then proceeds to make a series of blatantly false accusations against the CPI(M) leadership both in West Bengal and the Centre. Doing away with the embellishments, the arguments advanced are as follows:

  1. The CPI was deprived of the Rajya Sabha seat as the CPI(M) was annoyed with the CPI line in the Bihar assembly elections. (ii) Gurudas Dasgupta, the retiring member was axed as he was targetted by the big business houses and in the conspiracy was involved the son of the Chief Minister of West Bengal. (iii) The coterie in the CPI(M) leadership both in the Polit Bureau and in the state are all part of this conspiracy. In all the three reasons cited above, the entire leadership of the Party is implicated as "petty manipulators guided by subjective prejudices and sectarian considerations".

Further, the editorial has the effrontery to suggest that the Chief Minister, Jyoti Basu is himself involved in this so-called conspiracy. He writes "While the vested interests in the CPI(M) Polit Bureau cannot and must not be absolved of blame in this case, the West Bengal CM's role in this episode merits close scrutiny".

Such are the rantings of the editor who in the past has distinguished himself by advising the CPI(M) to follow Gorbachev in liquidating the Party and who has now taken on the role of a supporter of the Vajpayee government's nuclear policy and "productive relations" with President Clinton.

The fact of the matter is that there was no question of any individual being nominated for the seat by any party being a matter of discussion. The CPI(M) was clear that it had a claim to the three sitting seats it held. The fourth seat was to alternate between the Forward Bloc and the RSP and the fifth seat which was allotted to the CPI in 1994 had to be given up this time as this seat could not be won by the Left Front. This was a stand dictated not by the individual who held the seat but on the consideration of the strength of various parties in the state assembly elected in 1996. Even if the CPI candidate had been someone else, the stand of the CPI(M) would have been the same. The CPI disagreed with this position and it is good that the differences were finally settled.

The editor of the Mainstream is obviously unhappy that the interests of Left unity prevailed at this juncture. For it is well known that in the earlier days, the same editor had advocated unity of the CPI with the Congress, and now has developed symptoms of softness towards the BJP.
