A large number of delegates participated in a CPI(M) convention against commnalism and price hike held on April 3rd, 2000, at Jammu, presided over state secretary, M Y Tarigami. Leaders of various political parties and intellectuals spoke on the occasion.

M Y Tarigami, while addressing the convention, appealed to various political parties including the All Party Hurriyat Conference to fight against the on-going blood-shed of innocent people in the state.

"Let us evolve a consensus that killing of innocent people be stopped. If we do not take steps in this direction, the state will be ruined", he said. Tarigami further said that consistent efforts to destroy the age-old traditions of communal harmony, tolerance and brotherhood are being made. Selective killings of different communities at regular intervals are perpetrated in a calculated manner to dismantle the very basis of our composite culture and pluralist society. The recent killing of 35 Sikhs in Chattisinghpora in Anantnag is also a part of the design, he said. "Sufferings of the people should unite us. Stop saying Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs were killed. Take it in a spirit that bloodshed of our breather is continuing," he appealed.

Tarigami appealed to all secular parties, including the secular allies of the BJP in NDA government to "save" India from fascist forces, He also pleaded for creating an atmosphere for immediate Indo-Pak dialogue so that efforts to resolve the issues are made instead of spending huge sums on armaments.

The BSP leader, Sheikh Abdul Rehman, in his speech, observed that a well en-trenched vested interest was behind the communal clashes and exhorted the like minded political parties to formulate join programme in order to resist the mechanations of communalists of all hues.

The eminent intellectual and author, Shir Balraj Puri explained that the communalism today was assuming dangerous proportions by appropriating to itself the right to judge as to who was patriotic and who was not .

The Congress leader, Prdhuman Singh narrated the glorious role played by common people of Kashmir in 1947, while resisting the Pak-raiders.

A resolution on communal harmony was presented by O. N Trisal (Advocate), which was adopted unanimously and two-minute silence observed in re-memberance of 35 Sikhs assassinated at Chattisinghpora.

Another resolution on price hike was presented by H.C. Jalmerai (Advocate) which also was unanimously adopted in the convention.

Comrade Bishan Dass, K K Bakshi and Om Prakash also addressed the convention.
