The Left Front Government has decided to make greater use of Bengali in as many departments as possible from the first day of the Bengali new year, computer and even internet facilities were proposed to be utilised to get the desired results. Already in an effort to get the computer keyboard developed in Bengali, an agreement was signed with Webel. The agreement will be effective from the later half of this month.

Side by side, the State Government also decided to expected the use of Bengali in all possible ways in government work.

On January 26, 1965, Bengali was declared the official language. Even after the lapse of so many years the use of Bengali in Government’s work has not been satisfactory so far. The Chief Secretary, Mr. Manish Gupta has already sent a circular to all the Government departments asking the Departmental heads to see to it that official work be conducted in Bengali from the first day of Baisakh.

Everywhere, from Writers’ Building to the panchayat offices Bengali should be the language of communication to the extent possible. The Chief Secretary’s directive makes it clear that all letterheads, writing pads boards name plates in State Government offices, Government undertakings, autonomous bodies will have to be printed or displayed in Bengali. If need be side by side English could be used. English alone will not suffice.

All letters written in Bengali to Government departments will have to be replied to in Bengali. Remarks in official files will have to be made in Bengali as far as practicable.

Meanwhile the State Government has, at the State Level formed a Ministerial committee. Another committee with academics and intellectuals has also been formed. Another committee has also been formed to advise the state government in how swiftly it could complete arrangement for using Bengali in the Government’s even in critical areas.

All these three committees have already made some recommendations to the State Government. These recommendations will be implemented in phases. According to the Deputy Chief Minister, Buddhadev Bhattacharya extensive use of Bengali in State Government work will enhance the skill of the administration and make it more responsive to the needs of the people. The administration will be more dynamic too. In future, candidates will have to offer Bengali as a compulsory paper in all examinations for recruitment of personnel in Government offices. In future, inter-departmental notes, circulars will have to be issued printed in Bengali and the proceedings in tribunals will be conducted in Bengali to. Bhattacharya also said that the departments such as health, education, police, Animal Husbandry which directly deal with the people will be required to display their orders, notice in Bengali to the extent possible. Birth and death certificates too will have to be issued in Bengali. For non-Bengali officers working in the State Government a bridge course of short duration will have to be introduced. More typewriters with Bengali keyboard will be purchased for government offices.
