Towards the end of the current month, Left Front leaders will meet central Ministers in a deputation in Delhi to seek financial assistance for or implementation of projects intended to curb erosion of the rivers, Ganga, Padma, Bhagirathi and the Hooghly mainly in six districts in West Bengal. The districts affected by such erosion are Malda, Murshidabad, Nadia, Hooghly, Burdwan and South 24 Parganas six districts. Around is time Mr. Jyoti Basu will be in Delhi and the Chief Minister is also expected meet the Prime Minister and urge him to arrange for central funds to cub erosion of the rivers in six districts in West Bengal. It was a consensus at a meeting in Writers’ Building on Thursday that the Center should treat the problem of erosion of the Ganga and other rivers as a national problem and allocate funds for the purpose as no single State Government can tacks the problem on its own.

The Writers’ Building meeting was attended by Mr. Jyoti Basu and other Left Front leaders. Besides the leaders of the Left Front of the affected districts, Sabhadhipatis of the concerned districts too were present.

Basu told the meeting that the center was still dragging its feat in the matter of financing the projects intended to curb erosion by the Ganga and other rivers in the state. Although the State Government has already spent Rs. 60 crore on this count another Rs. 90 crores was earmarked for the purpose at the Writers’ Building meeting.

An expert committee appointed by the Center has recommended that an amount of Rs. 612 crores will have to be spent on a long term basis to curb erosion by the Ganga and other rivers in West Bengal.

But the Center’s contribution for year purpose from the purpose is highly unsatisfactory.
