| NEWSNOTES Police action in Jamia condemned
INN T he barbaric torture unleased by Delhi Police at Jamia University has evolved hue and cry among the political parties and the people. Hannan Mollah, Member of Parliament, Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Obaydullah Azmi, Member of Parliament, Rashtriya Janata Dal visited the Jamia Milia University said in a statement:We were shocked to see the marks of barbarity left by the police attack on the students of Jamia Milia Islamia University in the SRK House Hostel. The conditions in Pink House, White House and Sartaz Hostel are not different. The mosque was attacked, glasses broken, the mats burnt and teargas shell hit inside. The Imam Mahmadul Hussain was beaten with unprecedented brutality. A student Azad was thrown out from the third floor and no report is available about his condition. Hundreds of police led by one DCP continued the barbaric attack for the whole night, broken the doors of most rooms, beaten the students engaged in their studies for the on-going examinations, looted their money and other properties, destroyed their belongings. The foreign student Abdul Quaib of Yeman and Atikul Islam, Sahin and Tarikul were mercilessly beaten and they are very badly injured. Six students jumped from third floor to escape from police attacks. We saw more than twenty-five rooms were totally devastated, ransacked, looted by the police. The stint of blood seen in many places. The vehicles of the students were damaged. More than two hundred students were injured, 146 of them very seriously. Eleven students were treated in Deendayal Hospital in very serious condition and they were kept under custody even violating court order. 92 students were released so far, but 66 still are in Tihar jail. Nobody is allowed to meet the injured and detained students in jail. We in our horror visited for one hour and talked to the students including some injured. We never seen such police brutality inside the campus. It is unfortunate that the Vice Chancellor, Shri S.S. Mehdi permitted the police to enter into the campus and approved this barbaric attacks. He came to the campus after two days and did nothing for the injured students. The university authorities seemed to be in total connivance in this uncivilised attack on the students. The best students, university toppers, best athletes were beaten like animals and nobody from the authority came to help them so far. We heard the students and saw things in our own eyes. Most of them complaints that their money, valuables, other belongings were looted by police. These shows police behaved brutally with vengeance and with communal bias, violating all the laws of the land. During their night-long operation barbarity, they used very filthy, uncivilised and communal languages. There are serious unrest among aggrieved students. Four students were sitting in hunger strike at the campus. We appeal to them to maintain their cool and continue their movement against police atrocities in peaceful way, in a united manner. We condemned this unprecedented brutality by uniformed gangsters with all the strength at our command and we also condemn the inaction of the government against the culprits in uniform. The whole campus is very tense and police and RAF cordoned the entire area as if they declared war against the students. We demand that the atmosphere of terror should end and the government should immediately talk to the students and bring normalcy in the campus. We demand that the DCP and other culprit police officials should be suspended and a judicial enquiry be held. We also demand that all the students detained in Tihar jail be released and all false cases be withdrawn. All the injured should be provided with proper medical assistance immediately. The looted money and valuables of the students should be returned and they should get compensation for their losses. The anti-student incompetent VC should resign and the authority should create proper atmosphere of peace and study in the campus for the examinations. The Delhi state secretariat of the CPI(M) has issued the following statement: The CPI(M) strongly condemns the brutal use of force by the police on the students of Jamia Milia Islamia. It is apparent from the reports that there was no reasonable ground whatsoever for the police to enter the campus and beat the students mercilessly and indiscriminately. The police has successfully converted a minor incident into a big atrocious one. It also shows the total lack of professionalism on the part of police officials to deal with the situation, they have no business to enter the campus and the hostel. The CPI(M) demands that such insensitive and unprofessional police officials should be removed from the area and an impartial inquiry be held to punish the guilty police officials who are responsible for the atrocities on the students. The CPI(M) also urges upon the university authorities to ensure that such shameful incidents are allowed to be repeated on the campus. |
