By the end of October, 2073 fresh villages will be supplied with electricity in West Bengal. The State sponsored Rural electrification Development Corporation will do the electrification in 1500 of the villages next year. The Rural Electrification Corporation has been set up to complete the task of electrifying all the villages in the State.

Although the BJP and its allies have been clamoring for privatising power generation and distribution the Left Front Government has been continuing with the State Electricity Board and other generating bodies. In the next year R.E.D.C. will take up electrification of 1,500 fresh villages. Cooperation extend by the rural folk in implementing the rural electrification work is example in West Bengal. The power generation cost is also not high the State. The REDC had its meeting held in the Great Eastern Hotel on Thursday last. Besides Power Minister, Mr. Mrinal Banerjee, the Chairman of the REDC, Sujan Chakravarti too was present. In October when the present work for rural electrification ends, work for the power sector in the planned sphere for 2000-2001, Rs. 220 crores have been earmarked. As per plans, fresh 15000 villages can be supplied with electricity with this fund. The Corporation will soon declare four blocks as model ones. These are Domkal in Murshidabad, Debra in Midnapore, Khandaghosh in Burdwan and Diamond Harbour II, in South 24 Parganas District.
