kerala2.jpg (113396 bytes)Kerala chief minister E K Nayanar led the all-party dharna outside the Parliament against the hike in prices of kerosene, cooking gas and cut in fertilisers subsidy. The action was in pursuance of the recent unanimous resolution passed in the Kerala assembly demanding the centre to withdraw the hike.

The dharna was attended by the CPI(M) and CPI general secretaries, Harkishan Sing Surjeet and A B Bardhan, Congress President Sonia Gandhi, and former prime ministers V P Singh and I K Gujral.

Cutting across party lines, all political parties represented in the Kerala Assembly participated in the dharna. Prominent Kerala leaders at the dharna were former chief ministers K Karunakaran and A K Antony (Congress), E Chandrasekharan (CPI), K M Mani (Kerala Congress), P K Kunhalikutty (Mkerala 1.jpg (98522 bytes)uslim League) and P J Joseph (Kerala Congress). All the MPs from Kerala were also present at the dharna.

In one of a rare show of unity for the cause of common man leaders of all above mentioned political parties spoke at the dharna site, the meeting was presided over by E K Nayanar.

The speakers highlighted how a state like Kerala will suffer from the price hike. It is one of the few states with a strong Public Distribution System Network (PDS), and the hike will have an adverse bearing on the state exchequer.

It was also pointed out that Kerala has been an export earner and the decision of the union government to allow import of more than 500 agriculture producing items will hit the state.
